Field guide no. 01

Begin anywhere

A journal made to become yours.

Keep the leather. Change the pages. Let every crease, finished insert, and half-formed idea become part of one long story.

Handmade FDO leather journal with cord and charm

Made by hand · used by you

Your first pages

A ritual in three movements.

There is no perfect system to learn—only a simple way to assemble the journal and room to make it personal.

01

Choose

Follow the page you need today.

Lined for words, dotted for plans, blank for everything that refuses a label. Mix inserts as often as your practice changes.

02

Set

Give the notebook a place to live.

Open the cover flat. Open your insert to its center and slip it beneath the interior cord until the spine sits comfortably in the middle.

03

Begin

Start where the thought begins.

The first page is not a test. Write in the middle, draw in the margins, paste something in, or leave space. The journal will find its shape through use.

Three ways into a thought

What kind of page are you today?

Use one. Combine all three. Replace them when your needs change.

Tell it

Lined

Letters, morning pages, lists, memories, and the stories you want to keep.

Map it

Dotted

Plans, trackers, diagrams, and ideas that benefit from a quiet underlying rhythm.

Imagine it

Blank

Sketches, collage, free writing, and everything that refuses to stay inside lines.

Notes on caring for the leather

Keep it dry

Blot unexpected moisture with a soft cloth, then let the cover air-dry naturally.

Scuffs are memories.

Hughes full-grain leather journal

Patina is the point.

Condition lightly

Use a small amount of neutral leather conditioner only when the cover begins to feel dry.
